What Does Vitamin C Do ?

Vitamins

What does vitamin c do , you ask? I {Tyka Calloway, CEO, PW} would like to share the awesomeness of what this nutrient can do. So, we have all heard the wailing shouts of our parents, "I don't want you catch scurvy," "you need more calcium in your diet," or even the ever loved "Santa won't visit you this year if you don't eat more oranges." My parents did over exaggerate and sometimes use whatever means they could do to make sure I was healthy. However, there was good reason for this. Vitamins are essential nutrients needed for various biochemical and physiological processes in the body. Vitamin C (or ascorbic acid) can protect against immune system deficiencies. It can also protect against eye disease and skin wrinkling. Yes, that's right. Vitamin C in and of itself has anti aging benefits. In fact, experts say Vitamin C is one of the safest and most effective nutrients with benefits that are still being discovered.

What is Vitamin C and Where Can It Be Found?

Some doctors have even gone as far saying, "higher blood levels of vitamin c may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health." In fact, vitamin c is a vital nutrient for health. Thus, it's only necessary if your goal is to have good bones, skin, and blood vessels. Healthy living should be everyone's goal, thusly, everyone needs Vitamin C. However, where do we find it? Well, vitamin c actually occurs naturally within some foods such as fruit and vegetables. In fact, it can be found in many citrus fruits, green peppers, red peppers, strawberries, and tomatoes. Also, vitamin c can be found in broccoli, brussels sprouts, turnips, and other leafy vegetables. Moreover, its noteworthy that some animals can synthesize vitamin c, but we as humans cannot.

What Does Vitamin C Do?

What does vitamin c do? According to Dr. Kathy Taghipour, “Vitamin C products are packed with antioxidants that are known for providing a brightening and “glowy” effect on our skin." This expert dermatologist also states, “It naturally improves the appearance of skin by fighting signs of aging and UV exposure, along with hyperpigmentation and dark patches.” However, this is only a "skin deep" look at the nutrient's benefits. Hopefully you enjoyed that pun as much as I did. Past the surface (another pun) of vitamin c's skin benefits, the nutrient helps body functions in a plethora of ways.

How Does Vitamin C Help The Body?

Vitamin c is water soluble and the body does not store it. Vitamin c aids our bodies in performing functions more efficiently. Thus, our bodies need vitamin c. Here are some of these functions:

  • helping the body absorb iron
  • boosting our immune systems
  • enhancing wound healing
  • vitamin c is an antioxidant; it helps remove unwanted substances known as reactive oxidative species from the body
  • aids collagen production

Can You Have Too Much?

The National Center for Biotechnology Information has publicized a Dietary Intakes (DRI): Tolerable Upper Intake Levels, Vitamins. This goes over the acceptable intake levels based on a person's age and circumstances. It delves into their recommendations for kids, adults, males, females, and even pregnant women. Thus, I recommend visiting their site at the hyperlink above.

Can It Replace Sunscreen?

No, vitamin c cannot replace sunscreen. In fact, you should not and we do not claim that Purely Wrapped products rich in vitamin c can replace suncscreen. Yes, the antioxidants in vitamin c may help defend against the damage that UV light can cause. However, it can't replace SPF because it does not absorb UVA or UVB rays. Although, some research suggests vitamin can help stop the harm UV light causes when it enters skin.
